“For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:38-39
Saint Peter and Saint Mary Magdalene is the town centre Parish Church in Barnstaple, where a warm and friendly welcome is extended to all. We aim to be an inclusive church for everyone in the area, irrespective of age, gender, marital status, sexuality, nationality, disability, or background. We believe that every person is a child of God, valued and loved, and that we all have gifts and talents to contribute and share.
Service Times and Events
Our main Parish Mass is at 10:30am on Sundays. The service is ‘modern catholic’ in style: traditional, accessible, and friendly. We aim for an atmosphere of relaxed formality; no one stands on ceremony. So there’s no need to dress up specially (unless you’d like to) – feel free to come as you are. 😊 Tea and coffee are served afterwards.
The weekly coffee morning, Tuesdays from 10am, is another good time to visit. Tourists and anyone new to the area are most welcome.
If you’d like to join us as a new worshipper, or if you need any further help or information, please don’t hesitate to get in touch, for instance by emailing us via the contact form on this website.

2 Samuel 7.18-end
Acts 7.54 – 8.3Collect
O God, you declare your almighty power
most chiefly in showing mercy and pity:
mercifully grant to us such a measure of your grace,
that we, running the way of your commandments,
may receive your gracious promises,
and be made partakers of your heavenly treasure;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.Post Communion
Lord of all mercy,
we your faithful people have celebrated that one true sacrifice
which takes away our sins and brings pardon and peace:
by our communion
keep us firm on the foundation of the gospel
and preserve us from all sin;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Matthew 6.19-34Collect
God of all tribes and peoples and tongues,
who called your servant John Coleridge Patteson
to witness in life and death to the gospel of Christ
amongst the peoples of Melanesia:
grant us to hear your call to service
and to respond trustfully and joyfully
to Jesus Christ our redeemer,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.Post Communion
God our redeemer,
whose Church was strengthened by the blood of your martyr John Coleridge Patteson:
so bind us, in life and death, to Christ’s sacrifice
that our lives, broken and offered with his,
may carry his death and proclaim his resurrection in the world;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.(or)
Eternal God,
who gave us this holy meal
in which we have celebrated the glory of the cross
and the victory of your martyr John Coleridge Patteson:
by our communion with Christ
in his saving death and resurrection,
give us with all your saints the courage to conquer evil
and so to share the fruit of the tree of life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.Collect on the Eve of Matthew
O Almighty God,
whose blessed Son called Matthew the tax collector
to be an apostle and evangelist:
give us grace to forsake the selfish pursuit of gain
and the possessive love of riches
that we may follow in the way of your Son Jesus Christ,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.Collect on the Eve of Trinity 14
Almighty God,
whose only Son has opened for us
a new and living way into your presence:
give us pure hearts and steadfast wills
to worship you in spirit and in truth;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. -
